Many Voices: Japanese Languages in Canada
Japanese languages have been spoken in Canada since the late 1800s. From nisei nihongo to language schools to the rise of Japanese as a global language, Many Voices: Japanese Languages in Canada explores the diverse experiences of Japanese-speaking communities across generations of migration, settlement, and displacement.
For this exhibit, I created a series of ethnographic comics based on interviews with Japanese Canadians, bringing their personal stories and experiences with language to life through visual storytelling. Through this project, I hope to celebrate the linguistic diversity of Japanese Canadian communities and explore the connections between language, identity, memory, and belonging.
Part 1 of the comics was primarily hand-drawn with acrylic paint markers and gel pen on poster boards. Editing was done on Clip Studio Paint.
